The classic 1946 Christmas movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” follows the life of George Bailey, a character who, on Christmas Eve, is whittled down by such significant financial stress that he considers ending his life.
After an angel convinces him to continue living, Bailey comes home on Christmas Eve to find that his entire community pooled together their cash to pull him and his family out of financial ruin, ending the film with a heartwarming rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” and the kind of Christmas miracle that only really takes place on Hollywood movie sets.
In reality, the stresses of those down on their luck seem to only multiply around the holidays, when temperatures plummet, and purchasing gifts and large meals for the family makes expenses skyrocket.
Massachusetts families especially feel this pressure, as it is near the top of the list of most expensive states to live in. Rent prices are no exception. For one local woman, who said her landlord raised her rent by $400 this year following an expensive surgery and hospital stay, a cheerful Christmas for her and her family seems unlikely.
“Right now, I am trying to catch up with everything that became past due, and I do not think I will be able to purchase toys or gifts this Christmas,” she said.
Although, unlike George Bailey, no angels will visit her to solve her problems this Christmas, donating to Item Santa can provide this woman and her family the closest thing to a miracle possible.
