LYNN — MBTA Commuter Rail service returned to Lynn on Monday.
Commuters returned to the temporary platforms to catch the train to Boston Monday morning.
Jomari Ramos works at TD Garden.
“I commute every single day,” he said. “I had to take the shuttle bus all the way to Swampscott.”
Since the Lynn station closed for renovations last year, commuters had to find other ways to reach their destinations.
MBTA offered a free shuttle service to the Swampscott Commuter Rail station, and a ferry service, which ended in October.
Other commuters chose to drive to Revere.
“I was driving to Wonderland and taking the subway from there,” Liam O’Rourke, an attorney who works in Boston, said. “This will definitely make life easier.”
John Miller also commutes to his job in Boston.
“This is going to be easier for me,” Miller said. “I was driving to Wonderland.”
The interim station consists of two side platforms: the inbound platform can be accessed from the Ellis Street parking lot, and the outbound platform can be accessed through a walkway beside the Senior Center on Friend Street.
The pedestrian connection between the two platforms will use the existing sidewalks under the Silsbee Street Bridge. The interim station is fully accessible, with ramp access to each platform.
The station is listed as Lynn Interim on MBTA Commuter Rail schedules.
MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng pointed out the importance of restoring rail service to Lynn.
“The MBTA is proud to be a vital partner to Lynn’s bright economic future and the community’s local businesses and residents,” Eng said. “By ensuring the city of Lynn is connected to Boston and other major cities increases job opportunities, access to essential services, and the vibrancy of its downtown area. Through the acceleration of bringing service back to Lynn, we are reconnecting communities and the public we serve.”
