As far as most of us are concerned, the COVID-19 pandemic is a relic of the past. A frightening reminder of how rapidly our sense of normalcy can deteriorate, but one that most of us are content leaving behind. And while the worst economic projections of the pandemic’s impact — i.e. a recession — have not come to bear, that doesn’t mean Americans aren’t still struggling with inflation and rising costs of goods.
In fact, more than 8,000 Americans held multiple jobs as of November 2023, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That number plummeted during the pandemic but has since steadily risen, mirroring figures from before COVID-19. It’s not hard to image that economic pressures are driving those decisions.
For one local parent, a car accident has left them unable to work the two jobs they used to hold, and with Christmas just days away, they wrote to Item Santa for help. This parent has been in therapy for the last six months recovering from the accident, leaving them without the dual streams of income they once had.
“I need (educational) toys for her, my princess,” the parent wrote.
It’s impossible for requests like these not to pull on the heartstrings, especially during the holidays. This parent needs help providing a Christmas to remember for their “princess” and with the holiday just days away, every dollar matters.
