LTE: The Marblehead School Committee should focus on education, not signs

To The Editor

December 20, 2023 by To The Editor

To the editor:

Regarding the issue of signs on school property. What do signs have to do with higher standards of education and test scores for our students? Celebrating diversity is part of education. Free expression in a supportive way is a gift of freedom of speech. For the School Committee to step in and micromanage what signage is on school property is ridiculous. Controlling signs on our personal autos on school property is definitely micromanaging beyond belief. Do they mean to tell us, with an unapproved sign on a personal automobile, we can’t park on school property for school events, i.e. graduation, sporting and educational events?  Are there no First Amendment rights being violated here? Do they expect the Marblehead Police force to enforce this? Do the police or School Committee have better ways to utilize their time?

Let’s focus on education! Two of these board members have outstanding lawsuits against our town, which questions their dedication to Marblehead. One board member ran for office and won, but never revealed publicly to the voters that he had an outstanding lawsuit against the superintendent. There is so much dysfunction here and it would seem these members took their positions with agendas in mind.

Please, let’s decide who the adults in the room are. Our schools are for the children. Let’s live up to the former standard of education in Marblehead.
