In a “great win against a very good Winchester team,” according to coach Matt Smith, his boys hockey Spartans defeated Winchester, 3-2, on Saturday.

Fresh off his first career shutout, Matthew Smith Jr. recorded 25 saves as St. Mary’s outshot the opposition, 27-18.

Aidan Fitzpatrick led the charge with two goals, while JJ Avery potted the other.

“We were outshot in the first, 11-3,” Coach Smith said. “It was a slow start, but we came alive in the second and third. [We] held them to six shots in the third when it mattered.”
