New member appointed to Lynnfield Recreation Commission

January 1, 2024 by Vishakha Deshpande

The Lynnfield Select Board appointed longtime resident Gerard Noumi to the town’s Recreation Commission at the board’s most recent meeting.

Noumi is a former member of the Finance Committee and the Recreation Path Committee, and Select Board Chair Joe Connell said he has been active in several communities and organizations in town.

Before his appointment, Noumi spoke about his experience and why he wished to join the Recreation Commission.

“I feel that I’m a strong candidate for the position because of my time serving on the Recreation Path,” Noumi said during the meeting two weeks ago. “I enjoyed my time working with the Select Board and other town boards and commissions, the great departments we have, as well as getting feedback from the community.”

Noumi said that he would follow the same approach on the commission as he did while working on the Recreation Path Committee.

“I feel that one of the approaches that I used for the Rec Path would be to listen and to seek the feedback of the aforementioned groups that I alluded to and find out what are the opportunities and where should we further investigate and look into for improvement,” he said.

Noumi, who has previously coached basketball, baseball, and flag football, wants to make sure that the Recreation Commission’s programs enrich the town’s community.

“The biggest thing for me is that I have three kids who are heavily involved in these rec programs,” Noumi said. “So my goal is to find additional activities. Make sure that when we look at these activities, they’re the content that people want both in fine arts and sports. But also make sure we’re not overcharging. We’re not looking at the community to make a profit. We’re looking at it to cover the cost of events.”

The Select Board agreed with Noumi’s ideas, and voted unanimously in favor of his appointment to the Recreation Commission until June 30, 2026.

“I’ve had a great experience working with Gerard over the years,” Select Board member Phil Crawford said. “I think he’s a great addition to the commission. I appreciate him and all the volunteer work that he has done.”
