The City of Lynn’s resident parking permits are going online.
Effective Jan. 1, residents who live on streets requiring parking permits must register their vehicles with the city.
“This is not really a change,” Jessica Chiappini, the city’s parking director, said. “Whatever streets that require residential parking permits will just now need to register online.”
She added that the city is moving away from the previously issued paper passes as they were being duplicated.
Residents on streets requiring a parking permit must present a valid vehicle registration with their current address and complete a resident parking application.
The applications are online at lynn.thepermitportal.com.
A digital permit will be issued for up to four vehicles registered at the address.
In addition, two visitor passes per household may also be obtained.
Resident parking permits and visitor passes are valid only for your designated area and not for other areas within the city.
Chiappini said that people can also come to the Parking Department at City Hall for assistance filling out the application.
“We’re trying to make it as easy as possible,” she said. “The Parking Department is trying to be as customer-friendly as possible.”
The big change is the cost, which is $20 annually per registered vehicle.
Chiappini explained that when the original parking permit ordinance was passed about a decade ago, it called for a fee to be collected, but it never was.
She said that the permit fees will help offset the cost of technology used for parking enforcement.
“We have license plate readers and will be able to see if they’re allowed to park on the street,” Chiappini said.
She said the city expects there to be bumps in the road with the transition to digital permits.
“If any residents have any problems or concerns, we’re asking them to give us a call,” she said. “We’re asking for patience as we go through it.”
