ROUNDUP: A barrage later, PLNR takes care of Newburyport

Talk about defending home ice. Wednesday evening at McVann-O’Keefe Rink, the Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading girls hockey team lit the lamp eight teams, dominating Newburyport in an 8-2 final.

Mia Lava and Shirley Whitmore each recorded three points, while Catie Kampersal, Abby McInerney, Yasmine Giacoline, and Ava Buckley registered two apiece.

Eleni Spack found the back of the net, while Leah Buckley, Vanessa Steinmeyer, and Maura Flaws dished out assists.

PLNR shifts its gears to Marblehead when it travels for a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday.

A loss, but not without positives.

Shawsheen may have escaped with a 3-1 victory on home ice, but the visiting Lady Headers didn’t make it easy. Madi Graber scored a crucial goal in the third period, assisted by Madi Reno and Teyah Fleming.

Freshman goalkeeper Scarlet Lee played fantastic with 29 saves, while Marblehead’s “overall defensive unit played well,” according to first-year coach Hadley Woodfin.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lynnfield 60
North Reading 34

North Reading came to town Wednesday night, but was sent home quickly after being doubled up by the Lynnfield Pioneers, who moved to 4-1 with the victory.

Sharpshooting Chris Daniels (22 points) and Alex Fleming (16 points, 14 rebounds) led the Lynnfield charge. Daniels connected on three from downtown.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Saugus 47
Marblehead 31

Marblehead suffered its first defeat of the season (5-1), falling to the Sachems (3-2) in a 47-31 final.

Despite a six-point deficit in the third quarter, Saugus stormed back behind Ashleen Escobar (14 points), Peyton DiBiasio (12), and Ana Silva (8). Madi Femino and Madison Botta played strong defensive games, according to coach Joseph Lowe.

For Paul Moran’s Magicians, Kathryn Pyne made six 3-pointers, finishing with 18 points.

BOYS HOCKEY

Arlington Catholic 4
St. Mary’s 2

St. Mary’s met its match at Connery Rink in Lynn on Wednesday. Despite Maddox Jacobson potting a pair of goals in defeat, the Spartans (6-3) were doubled up by Arlington Catholic.
