SALEM — It wasn’t easy, but the Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading girls hockey team escaped the Marblehead Lady Headers at Salem State University Saturday night.
Oh, captain. In the 2-1 final, PLNR veteran Catie Kampersal tucked the game-winning goal late.
“I am proud of my group for recognizing we were fighting the puck a bit last night, but through their battle and continually pushing until literally the horn went off, we were able to come away with the win,” said PLNR coach Michelle Roach.
Saturday was unlike Wednesday’s game against Newburyport, one in which PLNR lit the lamp eight times.
The story, however, was freshman goalie Scarlet Lee of Marblehead, who played an “outstanding game in net,” as said by first-year coach Hadley Woodfin.
Despite overlooking the opposing bench, Roach agreed.
“Their goalie played exceptionally,” she said. “She did a great job at getting in front of everything we threw at her.”
Marblehead’s goal came in the second period – that’s when captain Ava Shultz scored off a pass from Ella Graham.
Woodfin also credited Melanie Earl, Addie Co-Peeps, Lizzie Demady, and Samantha Demady for playing strong games.
PLNR visits Masconomet at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, while Marblehead travels to face Bishop Fenwick at 8:40 p.m. the same night.
