ROUNDUP: Swampscott freshman Byrne hits game-winner against Winthrop

January 16, 2024 by Mark Aboyoun

There aren’t a lot of teams that would be comfortable with a freshman taking a game-winning shot – on the road, no less.

But in the case of Swampscott’s girls basketball team, it’s glad it had Eve Byrne.

Byrne, who scored a team-high 12 points, scored the game-winning basket with four seconds remaining to stun Winthrop. Senior Victoria Quagrello added eight points in the victory.

The Big Blue (5-4) look for another road win when they travel to Saugus on Friday with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.

It’s always great to get a win on the road and, with this one, the Spartans moved to 11-3 on the year. Described as a “balanced attack” from head coach Jeff Newhall, Juliana Conte led St. Mary’s with 11 points.

Bella Owumi (10 points) and Lily Norton (9) played well in the win.

Newton North 55
Peabody 54

In a “tough, hard-fought game throughout,” as said by Peabody coach Stan McKeen, his Tanners were edged by Newton North Tuesday night.

Logan Lomasney led Peabody with 23 points, followed by Maia Davis and Aliana Ryan who added eight apiece.

Peabody takes on Masconomet this Friday.

It’s safe to say the Spartans had this game circled on their calendar – a rematch of last season’s Division 3 state championship game in which the Bishops got the better of St. Mary’s.

With a new team and new identity, this time, the Spartans prevailed against the Bishops. Leading the way for St. Mary was JJ Martinez, who scored 24 points.

St. Mary’s will travel to Arlington Catholic Friday for a 6:30 p.m. showdown.

Swampscott 59
Winthrop 53

The Big Blue (6-4) protected home court with a solid win over the Vikings. Swampscott sported three players in double figures: Connor Chiarello (17 points), Nakeylan Davis (14), and Liam Wales (13).

Head coach Jason Knowles praised Adam Sparacio’s defense.

“Adam Sparacio anchored our defense with several blocks and rebounds,” Knowles said.

Danvers 57
Saugus 50

Close, but to no avail. The Sachems briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on for a win at Danvers High School.

Saugus trailed, 33-20, and got the lead down to seven (43-36) in the third quarter.

TRACK AND FIELD

The St. Mary’s Spartans moved to 2-1 on Tuesday, defeating Arlington Catholic, 74-16. First place finishers included Victor Nascimento (600m, 1:55.8), Xavier Paula (1,000m, personal best 3:10.6), and Sal Vigliotta (shot put, personal best 38’4”).

The girls did not compete because Fenwick canceled its after-school events, but according to coach Tristan Smith, “They did put up some great times including a season best 4:38.1 in the 4×400 meter relay from Cam Dunn, Isabella Michel, Tina Amin, and Kelsey Kwiatek.
