Saugus to raise banners for conference winners next week

Charlie McKenna

January 16, 2024 by Charlie McKenna

Saugus is set to honor its conference-winning championship teams — specifically those that have won since the Middle/High School Complex opened in 2020 — with a banner unveiling next week.

The ceremony will be held in the complex’s gym at 6 p.m. on Jan. 23, and players and coaches from the winning teams are invited to attend. In all, banners will be hung for Saugus’ 2021 softball and volleyball teams, 2022 boys soccer team, and 2023 boys and girls basketball, softball, and girls soccer teams.

During the ceremony, which is organized by the Saugus School Committee Athletic Subcommittee, members will introduce the coaches and players on each team. Athletic Director Terri Pillsbury or one of the members of the subcommittee will be contacting former and current coaches and players to invite them, Subcommittee member Dennis Gould said in a statement.

Gould, who has spearheaded the banners process since the idea was first floated, said a follow-up ceremony will be held to honor championship-winning teams from the 1940s to the present day, hanging historic banners reflecting their achievements. A date has not been set for that ceremony yet and Gould said more information will be available in the coming months.

In August, the School Committee voted to accept a $6,000 donation from WIN Waste Innovations to fund the cost of purchasing the banners. Gould said at the time he believed an additional $6,000 was needed to pay for the cost of the historic banners.

Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact Gould at 617-257-4847 or [email protected].
