KIPP’s boys basketball team did a lot of things Tuesday night. It took care of Greater Lowell on the road, executed down the stretch in a 60-59 win, and upped its record to 4-6 on the season.
Trosky Peña led KIPP’s attack with 22 points, while Tolu Abosede added 12 with “two big back-to-back threes that put us up double digits,” as said by coach Moody Bey.
“He also did a ton of stuff that does not show up in the statbook,” Bey said.
As for the Lady Panthers, they put a lid on Nashoba Tech late in a 52-45 final.
For host KIPP, Katrina Fortes scored 11 points and hauled in 12 boards, while Hailey Herrera dropped nine points to go with four rebounds and Jasmine Castillo scored eight points alongside 11 rebounds.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Lynn English 75
Everett 73
Avenging a home loss to Everett from earlier this season, and erasing a 22-point deficit in this one, Lynn English left enemy territory with a 75-73 comeback victory on Tuesday.
Pierre Veras (20 points, 10 rebounds) hit the game-winning shot to silence the Everett faithful, while Kyle Kemembin (17 points) and Denzell Guillen (13 points) contributed in the win.
Lynn Tech 72
Greater Lawrence 35
Lynn Tech’s frontcourt did its job Tuesday evening, leading the Tigers to a dominant victory against Greater Lawrence. Jayden Welch scored 16 points and tracked down 15 rebounds, while Ederick Gonzalez scored 18 points to go with 10 boards.
The Tigers upped their record to 9-2 behind the double-double duo.
Lynn Classical 54
Malden 49
Thanks to Marvin Avery Jr. (25 points, 8 assists) and Rolky Brea Arias (12 points, 15 rebounds), the Lynn Classical Rams stormed into Malden and left with a road win.
“Our defense was unbelievable tonight and executed down the stretch,” said Classical coach Marvin Avery Sr.
Classical upped its record to 6-4 on the season.
Cathedral 69
St. Mary’s 59
Despite 18 points from JJ Martinez, 17 from Jake Fortier, and 16 from Devel Pamplin, the St. Mary’s Spartans met their match in Cathedral on the road, falling by double digits.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lynn Tech 58
Notre Dame 19
With Notre Dame coming to visit, Lynn Tech defended homecourt in a 58-19 thrashing. Allison Morales did it all, dropping 29 points to go with four steals, two rebounds, and a block.
Aliyah Volquez had 10 points, six steals, five rebounds, and an assist, while Engelyz Bingham had nine points, eight rebounds, and a block.
“Everyone contributed to a great team win,” said Tech coach Kaitlyn Wechsler, whose Lady Tigers upped their record to 7-3.
Lynn Classical 38
Malden 35
In a game featuring “balanced scoring, to say the least,” as said by Classical coach Tom Sawyer, his Lady Rams won a narrow matchup against Malden in enemy territory.
Six Classical players entered the scoring column, led by seniors Lauren Wilson and Linda Jallow with six points apiece.
The Lady Rams (8-2) visit Lynn English this Thursday.
Bishop Fenwick 58
Archbishop Williams 30
Fenwick got some help from just about everyone on the roster Tuesday night, topping Archbishop Williams by 28 points in Peabody.
Cecilia Kay (16 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists), Caitlin Boyle (12 points, 4 assists), Celia Neilson (10 points, 5 assists, 7 steals), Tess Keenan (6 points, 3 assists, 3 steals), and Bella Lopez-Marin (4 assists, 5 steals) all played their parts in the victory.
Fenwick is now 10-1 and hosts Arlington Catholic Friday.
Lynnfield 38
Amesbury 22
Leading just 18-12 at halftime, Lynnfield (5-5) turned it up in the third quarter and led by 10 points after the frame. From there, the Pioneers took care of Amesbury in the fourth to win, 38-22.
The third quarter featured a last-second, half-court shot from Erika Pasquale (7 points). Taylor Valiton scored 12 points and tracked down 18 rebounds for another double-double this season, while Hayden Valiton scored 11 points, hauled in eight boards, and blocked five shots.
“This was a good win for us,” said coach Sue Breen. “Our defense was very solid. We had some good passes and found a way to put together enough plays to seal the victory.”
St. Mary’s 57
Cathedral 49
Avenging an early-season loss to the Panthers, St. Mary’s capitalized on its home-court advantage to win, 57-49, Tuesday night. Jillian Roberts (14 points), Juliana Conte (12), Lily Norton (10), and Reese Matela (10) led the St. Mary’s (13-4) charge.
TRACK AND FIELD
Against Bishop Fenwick, St. Mary’s coach Tristan Smith called it a “heartbreaker” as his Lady Spartans fell to 44-43. They got revenge, however, topping Ursuline Academy, 49-36, to conclude the regular season at 4-3. Kelsey Kwiatek took first in the 1,000m, while Tina Amin did so in the 55m.
On the boys’ (2-2) side, the Spartans lost a close one (48-42) to Fenwick to finish their regular season.
Thomas Hooks impressed in the high jump, sporting a 6-3, which was good for second all time in St. Mary’s history.
