Peabody High junior Alex Jackson left nothing to chance Saturday at the annual Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Large Schools meet at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
Jackson left the competition in the dust in the shot put, winning the event with a heave of 57-02, more than six feet ahead of runner-up Myles Robertson of Haverhill.
In the process, the Tanner was named Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the meet.
Jackson’s performance included six legal throws over 54 feet and three over 56.
“This was an important win for Alex,” said Peabody throw coach Jay Smith. “A few weeks ago, he had a big win and a PR at the Dartmouth Relays, but with very inconsistent throwing. Yesterday was a career-best series, but in addition to the improvements in consistency, he’s focusing a lot on the mental aspects of his events. Bigger throws are coming.”

Saturday didn’t go as planned for the girls basketball Tanners, who fell 57-42 at the hands of Lincoln-Sudbury. Peabody was led by Logan Lomasney (17 points, 11 rebounds, 7 blocks), Maia Davis (12 points), and Abby Bettencourt (6 points, 7 assists, 6 steals).

Xaverian 1
With a great atmosphere from the St. John’s Prep faithful, the boys hockey Eagles flew right past Xaverian in a 6-1 final to capture the Catholic Conference Championship – Prep’s first since 2013.
Xaverian got on the board first, but Prep answered with two power play goals from Christian Rosa and Camden Umlah.
Rosa, Ethan Goodrich, Hunter Steiner, Joe Goldstein added insurance tallies to complete a dominant performance.

In a Sunday matinee, Avin Rodovsky lit the lamp twice – alongside two assists – and the Marblehead boys hockey team raced to a 4-2 win at Medford.
Kyle Hart (goal) dished out two helpers, James Caeran recorded a goal and an assist, and Hogan Sedky delivered two assists for the Headers.

Just days after an 8-2 win over North Reading in which Owen Considine scored twice, his Pioneers had no match for Amesbury on Saturday in a 6-4 final at McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody.

Despite John Crowley, Jayden LeBlanc, and Tyler Witten finding the back of the net, the Jets met their match in Everett/Malden/Revere on the road. Lynn’s Nicholas DeNino played well between the pipes with 45 saves.

The Lady Spartans clinched the Catholic Central Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 thrashing of host Bishop Stang. Gianna Tringale turned away 15 shots, while Kasey Litwin and Bella Freitas potted two goals apiece to lead St. Mary’s.

The Lady Headers gave it their all, but couldn’t score any goals against a strong Masconomet side at home. Scarlett Lee made 25 saves, while Madi Reno and Ava Baughn performed well, according to Marblehead coach Hadley Woodfin.

Despite a game-high 22 points from Jake Fortier, his Spartans fell at Martha’s Vineyard 75-64. St. Mary’s hosts Brook Charter this Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Lynnfield girls swim and dive team finished second at the Cape Ann League Championship meet at the Beverly Sterling YMCA.
The Pioneers tallied 359 points, second only to Triton, which finished with 589 points. The Pioneers’ 200 freestyle relay team of Isabella Shrewsbury, Chloe Cieslewicz, Ally Sykes and Sophia Trammontozzi took home the gold in 1:54.24.
The best individual efforts were turned in by Shrewsbury, third in the 50 free (27.88) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:10.02); Tramontozzi, third in the 100 fly (1:11.12) and third in the 500 free (5:51.75), and Sykes, third in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.30). Cieslewicz finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:35.99).
