Nahant announced that nomination papers are now available at the Town Clerk’s office for those planning to run for the office ahead of the town’s annual election on April 27.
The nomination papers are the forms on which potential candidates obtain valid signatures of registered voters in town for the office that is being sought. All candidates, incumbents, and challengers must obtain at least 20 signatures. They will remain available through Wednesday, March 6. However, completed nomination papers must be submitted by Friday, March 8, at 5 p.m. The deadline for withdrawing candidacy is Tuesday, March 26, at 4 p.m.
For residents, the voting registration deadline is set for Wednesday, April 17, at 5 p.m. Those who wish to vote by mail must apply by Monday, April 22 at 12 p.m.
Eight offices have positions to be voted on this April. Town Moderator, Clerk, and Constable have one seat open for a one-year term. Board of Selectmen, Town Assessor, and Public Library Trustee have one open seat for a three-year term. The School Committee and Planning Board each have two seats up for election with terms of three and five years, respectively. Come election day, polls are slated to be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Town Clerk Diane Dunfee explained how residents who register to vote by mail on a national and state level will also be sent town ballots as well.
“They can submit vote by mail, which the state sent out cards because there are three other elections this year,” Dunfee said. “So if they send that back with all elections, we’ll be sending them a ballot for town elections as well.”
She added that early voting will also be available for town elections, with the specific details still to be finalized.
