LYNN — The Fire and Police departments responded to the Blossom Street Pier Ferry Terminal on Wednesday afternoon in response to a vehicle that had driven off the pier and into the ocean.
At approximately 2 p.m., a white Toyota BZ4X reportedly began rolling toward the water with two people inside. While one managed to get out of the car before it hit the ocean, Gerry Cardona was still in it when it took the plunge.
“We came over here to have some lunch,” Cardona said. “I started feeling the car rolling a little bit. I grabbed a snow brush to try to stop it, and it wouldn’t stop… Next thing you know, I did everything I could, rolled down the window, and I climbed out and jumped in the water.”
Lynn District Fire Chief Joseph Zukas said Cardona refused treatment after being assessed by medical technicians, and there were no injuries or hospitalizations.
G/J Towing and Recovery soon arrived to extract the car, working in conjunction with members of the Fire Department.
Zukas noted that the vehicle is fully electric, which could pose a potential danger.
“Because of the salt water, there could be a reaction,” Zukas explained.
