ROUNDUP: Track and field Spartans represent well

St. Mary’s track and field teams competed in the Catholic Central Championships Thursday night at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, leaving with several strong performances.

The boys took second place behind a few medalists. Ernie Panias broke his own school record in the 55m (6.66) to repeat as conference champion. 

There were also two award winners from St. Mary’s: Thomas Hooks (Outstanding Field Athlete) and Chance Bonfanti (John A. Bosenquet Award for exemplary scholarship, citizenship, and character).

On the girls’ side, they finished sixth behind medalists Cierra Johnson (3rd place in shot put), Kelsey Kwiatek (3rd place in 1,000m), Cam Dunn (3rd place in 600m), and Tina Amin (3rd place in long jump).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Saugus 50

Danvers 40 

It’s official. Saugus was crowned champion of the Northeastern Conference Lynch Division Thursday night after defeating Danvers. Star Sachem Peyton DiBiasio led the way with 22 points, followed by Ella Castle who netted eight more.

Madi Femino played a strong defensive game and made several big plays, according to Saugus coach Joseph Lowe.

Lynn Tech 55

Pioneer Charter 19

Lynn Tech (10-6) snagged its 10th win of the season, qualifying for the MIAA Division 4 state tournament. In the 55-19 final, Allison Morales had 17 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and a pair of blocks.

Other contributing Tigers were Aliyah Volquez (12 points, 6 steals, 3 assists), Engelyz Bingham (11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists), Jaylianniez Beauchamp (7 points, 7 steals, 5 rebounds), and Niya Bingham (5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals).

Malden 59

Lynn English 50

Lynn English hit the road on Thursday against Malden, but returned empty-handed in a 59-50 loss. 

Jaeleigh Perry (18 points) and Amara Flores (14) led the scoring charge, while Jayleen Novas Rivera (8 rebounds), Teanna Nguon (8), Perry (8), and Saniya Patton (9) cleaned the glass nicely.

KIPP 31

Lowell Collegiate 14

The Collegiate Charter School of Lowell left at halftime in this one as KIPP raced its way to a 31-14 win at home. Katrina Fortes secured an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Laz Clark scored eight points alongside eight rebounds.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lynn Classical 53

Chelsea 48

Lynn Classical’s boys hoops team clinched its spot in the Division 3 state tournament with a single-digit victory over Chelsea. Marvin Avery Jr. (24 points) and Rolky Brea Arias (12 points, 13 rebounds) led the winning effort.

Danvers 75

Saugus 62

Despite strong performances from Danny Shea (18 points), Huey Josama (15), Isaiah Rodriguez (10), and Travis Goyetche (8), the Sachems dropped one on Senior Night in a “solid effort,” according to coach Joe Bertrand.

Lynn English 73

Malden 44

Lynn English captured the Greater Boston League regular season crown – for the second consecutive season – with a blowout win against visiting Malden. Carmelo Buese was the standout Bulldog, netting 23 points alongside eight boards.
