The weekend’s Spartan Classic high school basketball tournament was fun and games – for winners, at least – at St. Mary’s High School in Lynn.
With two days down and two to go, here’s how Lynn teams have fared in the largest co-ed tournament in Massachusetts thus far:
Just hours after the English boys’ heroic, come-from-behind win against Cambridge Rindge & Latin Friday night, the Bulldogs ran into an entirely new breed in Malden Catholic.
MC defeated English in a 5 p.m. tip-off Saturday evening by a score of 85-54. The Lancers had eight players with six or more points, and the versatility was too much to overcome.
The Lancers take on Dartmouth in Monday’s championship, while English (16-4) will play in Monday’s consolation against Springfield Central at 1:45 p.m.
Ninety minutes later on Saturday, Lynn Classical took on St. Mary’s in boys action. The Rams fell to the Spartans, 51-36.
Jake Fortier (16 points) and JJ Martinez (14) led the way for St. Mary’s, which takes on Lincoln-Sudbury in Monday’s title game at 6:30 p.m.
Almani Gerardo had 10 points for the Rams, who also received strong contributions from Kanny Fils-Aime and Daron Guillen. They play Lowell Catholic Monday at 10:30 a.m.
Fast forward a day, and what a game Sunday brought between St. Mary’s girls and Dartmouth.
The Spartans, 16-6, erased a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to win, 49-47, behind Bella Owumi’s 20 points. Dartmouth dropped to 17-2.
St. Mary’s takes on Oliver Ames in Tuesday’s championship game at 6:30 p.m.
