March 29, 2024 by Joey Barrett

Just hours after its season-opening loss against Swampscott Thursday evening, it was a happy Friday for Saugus’ girls lacrosse team. The Sachems defeated Mystic Valley, 11-5, on home turf to even their record to 1-1.

Starting the spring with a bang, Nina Penachio had five goals and an assist to lead the victors. She was followed by Jessica Valley (goal), Ashley Rezendes (2 goals), and Aly Mabee (3 goals, assist).

Saugus returns to action Wednesday against Salem at home (4:30 p.m.).

The Peabody laxmen met their match in their first game of the spring, falling to Ipswich in enemy territory, 8-5.

Despite defeat, there were plenty of positives. Matt Bettencourt went home with two goals and an assist, while Brandon Barone, Antonio Anzalone, and Jaden Kritikos tucked the others. Do-it-all Johnny Lucas led the Tanners in ground balls with six.

Coach Jason Marshall and Peabody host Danvers Thursday at 6 p.m.
