One up, one down for the Saugus baseball team as it took care of host Shawsheen Tuesday night. The Sachems (1-0), led by pitcher Cam Soroko’s complete game, escaped with a 4-0 victory.
Soroko (96 pitches) secured 11 strikeouts, and allowed just one hit and two walks.
“He had great control over his fastball today and also threw his breaking pitches very effectively,” said Saugus coach Joe Luis. “He had already thrown 80-something pitches in a scrimmage six days earlier.”
As for the offense, Shane Bourque went home with two hits and two RBI, Danny Zeitz and Jeff Murphy had one RBI apiece, and seven Sachems registered hits. Defensively, Bourque and shortstop Cam Bernard each made highlight-reel defensive plays, according to Luis.
Saugus (1-0) visits Salem at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
BASEBALL

Swampscott 0
Swampscott’s Jack Spear went 5.1 innings and allowed just one unearned run and two hits alongside eight strikeouts, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Big Blue (0-1) over Salem, which scored its winning run in the sixth inning.
David Palmer went 1.2 innings for Swampscott, giving up a hit alongside three strikeouts. Offensive production came from Chase Groothuis, Frankie Pappalardo, and Connor Chiarello, who all registered hits.
Minuteman 7
KIPP 1
KIPP took the field for the first time this spring, but left with a loss against host Minuteman. The Panthers had the game tied, 1-1, heading into the sixth inning, but it was all downhill from there.
On the bright side, Jendol Diaz pitched 5.1 innings, sporting 14 strikeouts and allowing just three earned runs.
SOFTBALL
Lynn Tech’s home game against Christo Rey was postponed (TBD).
Lynnfield 10
Boston Latin 5
It took a couple of innings for the Pioneers to get the bats going in their season opener, but once they did, there was no stopping them. Tied 2-2 after four innings, Lynnfield exploded for eight runs over the next three innings to seal the win.
Morgan Hubbard (2-for-4) smashed a 3-run, inside-the-park home run to lead the highlight footage. Kaila George (3-for-4, triple, stolen base, run) and Lily Williams (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI) had multiple-hit games.
Ava Gamache (2 RBI, triple), Catie Kampersal (1-for-4, run, RBI), and Olivia Kelter (1-for-4, run) also pitched in with hits, while Sophia Brown (7 IP, 3 hits, 4 earned runs) struck out nine to earn the win in the circle.
The Pioneers’ next game is Friday at home against Lowell Catholic.
BOYS LACROSSE

The Spartans – in game one of the Darwin Fernandez coaching era – lost by two goals and trailed by just one (3-2) at halftime, but, in the end, it went down as a loss against Danvers.
Sal Brogna picked up a season-opening hat trick, while Finn Racki followed with a pair of goals. Steven Lake made 26 saves between the pipes for St. Mary’s.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 13
Essex Tech 3
Swampscott took care of business against Essex Tech, 13-3, at home behind Coco Clopton’s five goals and two assists. Better yet, the Big Blue upped their record to 2-0 after last week’s season-opening 17-3 victory against Saugus.
Clopton was followed by Cecilia Tripp (3 goals), Samantha Demady (2 goals, assist), Sophia Ciciotti (2 goals, assist), and Mia Dahlman (goal, assist).

Talk about a dominant performance. Lynnfield played host to the Vikings on Tuesday and sent them home with a loss. Taylor Valiton led the charge with seven goals, while her sister, Hayden, netted a hat trick to go with an assist.
Ava Damiani, Aubrey Rocha, Kelly Briggs, and Jordan Calichman were Lynnfield’s other goal-scorers.

Against a “tough Middlesex League team,” as said by Peabody coach Michelle Roach, her Tanners fell in 13-6 fashion on Tuesday. Brooke Lomasney (3 goals, 3 assists), Ally Bettencourt (2 goals), Arianna Alvarado (first varsity goal), Victoria Vaz (assist), and Caitlin Snow (6 saves) led the charge.

Marblehead 2
Manchester-Essex defended homecourt successfully against the Magicians, with Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal calling it “a close match against a solid dual-town team.”
Senior captain Mika Garber beat Jack Cummins 6-0, 6-0, besting last year’s score by a game; Junior captain Jayden Janock and fellow junior Leo Winocour won their doubles matchup.
“Jayden and Leo came back to force a tie-breaker, which they pulled off after a back-and-forth battle,” Foukal said. “Great doubles play with excellent sportsmanship.”

Manchester-Essex 4
Marblehead 1
Marblehead hit the courts against Manchester-Essex, but met its match in a 4-1 final. The Magicians’ lone point came from sophomore Sami Dosch, who defeated Sienna Crocker 7-6, 9-7, and 6-2.
“This was a good first match for us. Manchester is always a competitive match and, as a coach, I really did not know what to expect from the match as we have new players in four of five starting positions,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “A real positive for us was the play of third singles, Sami Dosch. Sami was on varsity last year, but not a starter. She showed great patience and perseverance to win her match. Second doubles and singles also had super close matches. We will definitely learn some things from our losses and, hopefully, build on them and become better.”
TRACK AND FIELD
It was a “great day” at the McNiff Relays, according to St. Mary’s coach Tristan Smith, as his Spartans won the 4×100, courtesy of Ernie Panias, Justin Jennings, Will Ross Pena, and Brandon Cruz. Demetri Koutsoufalkis won the javelin throw, while Sal Vigliotta did so in shot put.
On the girls’ side, they captured first in the 4×100, thanks to Kaileigh Patterson, PK Njika, Kaylei Johnson, and Mia DeLeon. Also, Kelsey Kwiatek, Daniella Leo, Nina Lopes, and Sophia O’Brien took second in the 4×800.
