Athletic events – especially baseball – have been hard to come by with, frankly, some lousy weather, but the Lynn Tech and Bishop Fenwick baseball teams have made the most of their first games.
In a matchup previously postponed, Lynn Tech and Salem Academy finally got it on at Fraser Field. The end result saw the Tigers double up the opposition, 10-5, behind Will McCafferty’s nine strikeouts and zero earned runs across five innings.
“We started the season with our ace tonight and Will McCafferty did not disappoint,” said Tech coach Eddie Lewis. “He pitched well for the first five innings of the game and the rest of the team looked good, making sure they finished the game off for him.”
At the plate, Colin Newhall went 3-for-3 with two RBI, Nevin Gonzalez was a perfect 2-for-2, and “David Perez, Dylan Nordyke, and Chris Boyd all had base hits at key moments in the game,” according to Lewis. Do-it-all McCafferty also went home with a triple.
“We got off to a fast start tonight. We’ve been working hard all offseason and the hard work paid off tonight. I have to give a lot of credit to this group. They have a ton of chemistry and they all play for each other. The bats started flying early and I really liked how they looked on the bases tonight,” Lewis said. “It really was a team effort tonight and I look forward to seeing what this young group can do once we get rolling.”
Boyd picked up the save for Tech, which next takes on Boston Collegiate Charter School on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
“We must clean up some mistakes and tighten some things up but, overall, I’m happy that our guys got the opening-day win,” Lewis said.
As for the Crusaders of Fenwick – their first game under coach J.P. Reiling – they defeated Mystic Valley with ease, 6-0, on enemy turf.
A scoreless showdown after two innings, Fenwick rattled off four runs in the third inning, plus additional ones in the fourth and seventh innings.
Pitcher John Horgan led the charge, allowing just two hits across six innings to go with five strikeouts. Providing the offense were Jacob Behn (2 hits, RBI), Cesare Rollo (2 hits, RBI), and Anthony Herbert (2 RBI).
The Crusaders welcome Bishop Feehan to Peabody at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
