ROUNDUP: Brown takes over late for Jets

You could say the Lynn Jets of boys lacrosse were in a stressful situation Thursday night, facing a double overtime scenario against Somerville at Manning Field.

That said, Ian Brown put the team on his back late – tucking Lynn’s final four goals, including the winner in sudden death. The Jets (2-3) won an early candidate for game of the year, 6-5.

Other contributors included Jordan Em (goal), Alex Waterman (goal, assist), Jahir Maldonado (assist), and goalie Christian Serino who registered 30 saves.

The Jets seek a happy Friday as they host Saugus at 7 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

St. John’s Prep 13
Malden Catholic 3

Three games, three wins for the defending Division 1 champions. St. John’s Prep defeated Malden Catholic by double digits in enemy territory.

The Eagles were led by Brady Scudder (3 goals, assist) and Dan Cahill (2 goals, assist), while Danny Magoon and Sebastian Froeb played well defensively.

Will Crawford also scored a pair, and nine Eagles went home with goals. They next visit Bishop Guertin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Swampscott 16
Marblehead 9

Talk about a hot start. Swampscott upped its record to 4-0 after besting traditional archrival Marblehead in enemy waters. Sophia Ciciotti (5 goals) and Avery Laundry (4) combined for more than half of Swampscott’s goals.

Coco Clopton ripped a hat trick, Cecilia Tripp added a pair, and both Samantha Demady and Victoria Pierro found twine, too. Swampscott visits Salem on Monday.

Taking positives from a negative, Gretchen Smith (4 goals), Maddie Forbes (2), and Kathryn Commoss (2) led the Magicians (0-3), who also received 16 big saves from Molly Bullard.

Masconomet 15
Saugus 2

Just one day after Saugus’ monstrous 15-3 win against Whittier Tech in which Violet Hawley (2 goals, 3 assists), Nina Penachio (3 goals, assist), and Jessica Valley (3 goals, assist) led the barrage, Thursday didn’t come with the same treat.

Penachio and Aly Mabee scored goals, but that was it for Saugus in its 15-2 defeat on the road.

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Classical 3
Pioneer Charter 1

What a spring it’s been for the Rams, who improved to 4-1 on the young season in set scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-23.

“Very competitive match between two solid teams,” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc.

Josnoel Gonzalez (3 kills, 3 blocks), Jonathan Ly (12 kills, 5 aces), and Kenzel Lantano (28 assists, 3 aces, 7 digs, block) led the victors, who host Wakefield at noon on Tuesday.
