ROUNDUP: Saugus laxmen conquer Lynn at Manning Field

April 12, 2024 by Joey Barrett

The majority of Friday’s high school sporting events were postponed due to the weather, but the Lynn and Saugus boys lacrosse teams hit the turf at Manning Field for an early-season matchup.

Coach Rob Scuzzarella and his Sachems are a young group – very young. The team sports just five upperclassmen and eight middle-schoolers. But Friday night, beneath the bright lights, they snatched a 7-5 victory over the Jets.

Looking to keep the momentum intact, and led by captains Cameron Preston and Ryan Jones, the Sachems next host Winthrop at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 22.

As for Lynn, despite a losing effort, it was led by Ian Brown (3 goals, 2 assists). Other goal-scorers were Owen Toomey and Trey Rossetti, while Jacoby Comeau dished out an assist.

The Jets host Malden at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Blink, and you might miss Ava Nason scoring a goal for St. Mary’s. After an eight-goal performance against Bishop Fenwick on Wednesday, she netted eight more in Friday’s 11-8 win against Malden Catholic at Manning Field.

That wasn’t all for the hosts. Cassidy Cheney went home with a hat trick, while Emerson Hinchion picked up the win between the pipes – the school’s first goaltending win from a 6th grader.

In a quick turnaround, the Spartans visit Archbishop Williams at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Lynn Tech’s volleyball team (3-2) surpassed the .500 mark on the young season, sweeping the Collegiate Charter School of Lowell in set scores of 25-7, 25-23, 25-13.

On enemy hardwood, no less, the Tigers were led by Didlaire Jacques Jr. (7 blocks, 5 kills, 3 aces), Elmer Duran (15 assists, 2 aces, block), Anthoni Diaz (8 kills, ace), Felipe De Oliveira (13 digs), and Ederick Gonzalez (10 digs, 4 kills, 3 aces).
