May 15, 2024 by Joey Barrett

For Michelle Roach, who coaches both the Peabody girls lacrosse and Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading girls hockey teams, Wednesday marked a little bit more than a 14-2 victory over Gloucester.

The girls lacrosse win gave Peabody a Northeastern Conference Championship, making it back-to-back league titles for Roach after the girls hockey team snatched its chip a few months ago.

It’s Peabody’s first NEC title, as the program’s only other conference title came in 2006 (Greater Boston League).

Led by Brooke Lomasney’s three goals and five assists, as well as Madi Barrett’s three goals, the Tanners moved to 13-2 overall (13-0 NEC). Lomasney leads the conference in goals (64) and assists (44)

Other contributors were Ally Bettencourt (2 goals, assist), Arianna Alvarado (goal), Leah Bresnahan (goal), Bella Kassis (goal), Liz Moore (goal), Brianna Symonds (goal), and Avani Ingham (goal). Caitlin Snow wasn’t tested much between the pipes, but still made three saves when they mattered.

It was a tough one to swallow, as Lynnfield (7-10) left its matchup with familiar foe North Reading with a one-run loss.

“We led, 5-3, in the bottom of the sixth, but could not hold on against North Reading – the No. 8 ranked team in Division 3,” said Lynnfield coach Hector Longo.

Olivia Kelter was 3-for-3, while Lily Williams roped an RBI single and a two-run double.

Swampscott 6
Saugus 5

Swampscott escaped its conference foe with a one-run victory. Pitcher Hayden Haskell earned the win and hit a home run in the second inning. Also playing well for the Big Blue were Maddie Lilley (3-for-3, RBI, 2 R), Lauryn Fahey (2-for-3, RBI), and Olivia Barletta (2 H).

VOLLEYBALL

Chelsea 3
Lynn Classical 2

In a “five-set thriller,” according to Classical coach Christopher LeBlanc, his Rams fell to Chelsea in set scores of 20-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-21, and 15-17. Kenzel Lantano had 41 assists, Long Pham picked up 18 digs, and Leo Cruz smashed 13 kills.

“This was back and forth all day,” LeBlanc said. “Both teams left everything they had on the court. We got some key performances from Leo Cruz, who had the best he’s had as a Ram. Our key sophomore performers Kenzel Lantano and Long Pham were solid all day. Kenzel operated the offense efficiently and Long anchored our defense all day. We ended up falling just short in the fifth as Chelsea made a few more plays than us. It’s a set we can’t lose. We got out to a 10-2 lead and just couldn’t make the plays down the stretch to close it out. All the credit goes to the Chelsea kids, they played their hearts out at the end and wanted it just a little more than we did tonight. Hopefully, we can put this behind us quickly as we have Pioneer (Charter) tomorrow for Senior Night.”
