Over the years, St. Mary’s has produced its fair share of student-athletes that end up competing at the next level. The latest college commitment comes from the track, as Scott Amin has committed to UMass Dartmouth.
For Amin, he needed just one track season to score collegiate offers. The senior even leads The Commonwealth in the high jump.
Just how high can he jump? Well, the former basketball player recently broke St. Mary’s record in the long jump with an incredible 21-8 leap.
Now, it’s onto the next level.
“I chose UMass Dartmouth because I, first off, wanted to be close to home, but was also in search of a school that I knew would push me to excel in my overall track performance,” Amin said. “In addition, Dartmouth showed the most interest in me during the recruiting process – even being in attendance at one of my track meets.”
Amin transferred from Salem High to St. Mary’s, looking to further his academics and athletic ability.
“My journey at St. Mary’s started my sophomore year after I left Salem High School in search of a better education and athletics program,” he said. “St. Mary’s brought the best out of me and challenged me in the classroom, as well as on the track.”
It would be normal for athletes to be nervous about their next steps, but for Amin, he’s excited to show off his abilities.
“I’m excited about the opportunity [UMass Dartmouth] has provided, to display my high jump and long jump talents,” he said. “I’m not nervous, but, rather, more excited for the opportunity to work with coaches and other athletes who share similar goals as me.”
Track and field coach Tristan Smith believes Amin has untapped potential, and can’t wait to see what he’s capable of.
“I am excited to see how high – literally – Scott flies. He has the talent, no one can take credit for that, but that talent combined with his work ethic, his love for getting better, and his determination is what will cause him to make a, potentially, historic impact at the NCAA level,” Smith said. “I am proud to have played just a small role in, really, the beginning of his track and field story.”
Amin made sure to thank the people in his life who helped along the way.
“First off, I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to perform at a high level. I would also like to thank my wonderful parents for supporting me and my sister for encouraging me throughout my endeavors,” he said. “I would also like to thank my head coach, Coach Smith, as well as my other assistant coaches.”
The sky’s the limit for Amin, and with his leaping ability, you could say he’s bound to reach the very top.
