LYNN — Residents in the area of Orchard Street were evacuated after a contractor struck a high-pressure gas main on Monday.
After the leak began slightly before 2 p.m., the strong smell of gas was in the air and the leak itself was audible, as a loud sound similar to a mattress being deflated could be heard. Firefighters went from door to door evacuating all of the residents while the surrounding streets were blocked off by police.
Numerous National Grid workers arrived at the scene shortly after 2 p.m. to rectify the situation.
A temporary shelter was put in place at St. Michael’s Hall for residents who were unable to access their homes while the leak was being tended too.
The leak was managed at around 4 p.m.
