LYNN — Veterans’ gravestones at Pine Grove Cemetery will be honored with commemorative flags on Thursday.
Lynn and Swampscott Director of Veterans Services Mike Sweeney announced that his department has partnered with youth groups and the Lynn Veterans Council to place approximately 10,000 flags on gravestones.
The public, supporters, and families of service members are all invited to attend and celebrate at the cemetery at 5:45 p.m.
“I think it’s just beautiful to see people come out to decorate the graves of the veterans and honor their service,” Sweeney said.
He added it is a vital time of the year to show veterans and their supporters that the community remembers their service.
Sweeney said the ceremony has been going on “as long as anyone can remember,” but definitely longer than 20 years.
He said the public is welcome to call Veterans Services or visit City Hall to pick up a flag free of charge, as long as supplies are available.
The department has ordered approximately 20,000 flags.
