To the editor:
Over many years, the topic of the excrement on the beaches between Swampscott and Nahant has been a hot topic with many opinions on how to alleviate the accumulation and stench. Many proposals have been submitted dealing with high tech or science, but no solution. An aerial view from the tip of Little Nahant to the point in Swampscott reveals a shape similar to a bowl, in this case, I think a toilet bowl plugged up. The solution here is to unplug the bowl. Going back in time, Nahant was two islands. Prior to the causeway, there were two ways to gain access:
- By boat or ferry during high tide.
- Walk the sandbars at low tide.
Twice a day with the change of the tide, the islands of Nahant were surrounded with or by water. With no causeway, the toilet bowl would be flushed twice a day. I think the causeway is the result of people’s desire to access the once-popular resort area with no inconvenience.
For more information, I suggest the book “Nahant,” which I viewed at the Nahant Public Library.
This is my opinion, can you imagine what I would propose?
