You know what I’ve been thinking? They’ve lost six games in two seasons. Is that enough said?
St. Mary’s softball team went 21-2 last spring, but came up short in its state tournament quest, falling to traditional archrival Bishop Fenwick in the Division 3 Elite 8.
After that June, 2023 game, coach Colleen Newbury said, “We had to get the bat on the ball more and it just wasn’t happening.”
Well, this past week – and season – it’s been happening.
The No. 5 Spartans stand at 14-4 and host the winner of No. 28 Tri-County and No. 37 Montachusett this Sunday at noon.
But first, how they got there.
They went 3-0 last week with a victory against Cardinal Spellman, followed by two more against Lynn Classical and Swampscott in the John Holland Memorial Tournament.
Against Spellman, Gabby Marichal (2-for-3, run, 2 RBI), Ryleigh Williams (1-for-3, 2 RBI), and Aliza Crean-Oviedo (CG, 6 H, 10 K) led the charge.
As for the Holland, Brooke Moloney was named MVP of the tournament after going 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs in the title game – a 20-1 finish over Classical.
Spartans, good week.
