LYNN — A construction project to expand the Northern Strand Community Trail on the Lynnway is expected to begin in June and be completed in the fall of 2026.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s communications office, the project’s length is approximately 1.9 miles and includes segments of Western Avenue, Market Square, South Common Street, Market Street, the Lynnway, and Nahant Road. It will extend the Northern Strand from the current terminus at Western Avenue to the Lynn/Nahant shoreline.
The contractor for the project, J. Tropeano Inc., will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Lane closures are expected to be in place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.
The elements of work included in the contract consist of full-depth excavation, mill and overlay, hot mix asphalt paving, granite curbing, traffic-signal replacement, cement concrete sidewalk reconstruction, pedestrian-ramp reconstruction, signage, pavement markings, traffic control, landscaping, and modifications to street lighting and drainage, according to MASSDOT.
This project will include a combination of on-road and off-road elements to provide a separated space for bicyclists and pedestrians.
While the work for this project is yet to begin, there are several long- and short-term construction projects currently underway along the Lynnway. These projects include traffic improvements, utility service work, and curbing and sidewalk work with several different contractors.
As a result of the work, there will be lane closures and traffic and pedestrian detours.
