The girls at Girls Inc. were in for an exciting surprise Friday in celebration of the organization’s 160th anniversary.
To celebrate, Ward Four City Councilor Natasha Megie-Maddrey surprised the girls with a visit, and let them ask her questions about what it means to be a city councilor. Following Megie-Maddrey, Mayor Jared Nicholson surprised the girls, and read out a proclamation on behalf of the city.
“I’m so grateful for the amazing work that happens here at Girls Inc. and in order to celebrate what happens here, we have this mayoral proclamation,” Nicholson said.
He officially announced the week as “Girls Inc. Week” in Lynn, and then opened the floor up for questions the girls had about what it’s like to be a mayor.
“I encourage all citizens of the City of Lynn to learn about the very services and programs provided by Girls Inc., to recognize the contributions Girls Inc. makes … to inspire girls in Lynn to be strong, smart, and bold,” Nicholson said.
According to the organization’s website, Girls Inc. is the longest running girl leadership program. It was founded in 1864 to serve girls and young women who were experiencing upheaval in the aftermath of the Civil War.
