The Saugus Lynnfield Youth Hockey Mite 1, Mite 5, and Peewee 2 teams of the Valley Hockey League were awarded citations at the Lynnfield Select Board meeting Monday night for winning the league’s championships.

Head coach of the Mite 1 team, Mauro Colucciello, congratulated all three teams and said that he saw the teams grow throughout the season.

“I remember when you guys started,” Colucciello said. “All three of you guys trying to take your face off, at the end of the season you guys spread out, playing your position, you played great hockey.”

Colucciello then thanked the parents, and also referred to them as “security guards.”

You knew us, we needed help,” Colucciello said, adding that the parents helped with pizza and Christmas parties throughout the season.

Colucciello also recalled how the Mite 1 team bounced back after losing their first exhibition game 12-2 by learning, practicing hard, and listening to the coaches.

“After that, we went to the Christmas tournament,” Colucciello said. “…we scored the team 55 to five goals. We only let in five goals in five games we scored 55 goals. We had the fastest goal in hockey history for the Mites, two seconds in a game.”
