LYNN — Raw Art Works teamed up with Lynn Community Fridge for a project created by students of the Artists in Action program on Tuesday at City Hall Square.

Visitors had the opportunity to see the students’ artwork revealed and meet the artists in the Centerboard parking lot, where Lynn Community Fridge is located.

Artists in Action students chose Lynn Community Fridge as their focus for the project to raise awareness on the issue of food insecurity in the community by attracting people with colorful visual art on the community fridge.

“The purpose of the community fridge is really to combat food insecurity in Lynn. It’s a 24/7 open refrigerator and pantry that’s been open since June 2020, and it’s been up and running ever since,” Lynn Community Fridge founder Emily Bucklin said. “100%, I think that art as a way of a creative outlet is also a way to let people know that this is a more welcoming place, also just making it much more of a vibrant space. It makes people curious to see a bright, beautiful mural.”

Elisha Torres, one of the students of the Artists in Action program, said that while the project was intended to bring focus to the topic of food insecurity in the area, the topic of diversity in the community was also incorporated for one of the works.

“At the beginning of the year, we all talked about topics (the students) were interested in covering and this came up as the most prominent one, and then I reached out to Emily (Bucklin) and we decided to work together to make the fridge look a little more colorful and welcoming,” Helen Danz, the leader of the Artists in Action group, said.
