LYNN — Harrington Elementary School celebrated Reads Day, an annual celebration of literature and reading at the school, on Wednesday.

Nearly 50 people showed up from throughout the community to read to the school’s students. Among them were local authors, district administrators, leaders of local organizations, police officers, and firefighters.

Reads Day is a 21-year-old tradition at Harrington Elementary. It was first started by former librarian Carole Shutzer in 2003.

Students and teachers dressed up as their favorite characters from books for Reads Day.

According to Program Specialist Nikki Ruggiero, who was dressed as a racoon for the occasion, many members of the community came in a wave earlier in the day for Reads Day.

Camila Luciano Polanco, a 7-year-old student, said that she really enjoyed Reads Day. She said she especially liked a book that had been read to her class, which she called “the dog one.”
