NAHANT — The Boards of Library Trustees and Assessors each have a new member.
At a joint meeting, the two boards and the Board of Selectmen filled the vacancies left by the resignations of Daniel Munnelly on the Board of Library Trustees and Cameron Merrill on the Board of Assessors earlier this year.
Library trustees and assessors are both elected positions, but a replacement is appointed in the event of a resignation.
The Boards of Library Trustees and Selectmen voted unanimously to appoint resident Anne Bromer as Munnelly’s replacement.
Bromer graduated from Simmons University with a master’s degree in library science. She has experience in management with the Boston Public Library and said she has authored and published books in the past.
“Books and libraries have been my entire life,” Bromer said. “When I understood that this opening was coming up, I thought that was a good match.”
Bromer was selected instead of resident Mary Livingston, whose collegiate focus was on English and literature. Members of both the Boards of Selectmen and Library Trustees lamented that although the two candidates were extremely qualified, only one could be chosen.
“I really wish we had two seats to fill tonight, because both of these candidates are amazingly qualified,” Selectman Josh Antrim said.
Despite voting for Bromer, Board of Library Trustees Chair Anne Whiston Spirn and member Linda Jenkins still encouraged Livingston to get involved with the library through other avenues, such as the Friends of the Library organization or the Library Planning and Design Committee.
The Boards of Assessors and Selectmen voted unanimously to elect resident Edward Costigan as the town’s newest assessor.
Board of Assessors Chair David Hunt said he was grateful for the three candidates who expressed interest in the role, calling them an “abundance of riches.” Costigan served on the Medford Board of Assessors prior to his appointment in Nahant. Lewis served on Nahant’s Advisory and Finance Committee during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Manning has experience as a selectman in Nahant.
Bromer and Costigan’s terms will expire next April, when they will be able to run for reelection.
