ROUNDUP: Swampscott lax into the Final Four

Mark Aboyoun

June 9, 2024 by Mark Aboyoun

The fairytale story of the Big Blue continues after their 9-8 win over No. 5 Cohasset on Saturday. The win earned Swampscott a spot in the Final Four where they will take on top-seeded Nantucket on Tuesday.

It was a close game from start to finish. The teams were tied after the first quarter with three goals each, but in the second quarter, Cohasset found success on the offensive end scoring three goals to Swampscott’s one, to lead the Big Blue 6-4 at the break.

Swampscott came out in the second half and outscored Cohasset 3-2 in the third quarter to trail by one (7-8) going into the final 12 minutes.

The thing about this team, they don’t quit. In the final quarter, the No. 13 Big Blue kept Cohasset scoreless, while Swampscott found the back of the net twice to seal the win and a berth into the Final Four.

Leading the team was Liam Keaney who scored four goals and provided one assist. John Von Barta (3) and Carson Palmer (2) both got on the scoresheet.

Goalie Timmy Sheehan had another stellar game providing 11 saves to propel the Big Blue into the last four.

As head coach Geoff Beckett said, “These boys have no quit in them!”

Last year the team finished with an 8-10 record. This year, they only tasted defeat once and sit with a 20-1 record and one game away from the state championship game.

SOFTBALL

No. 4 Norton 1

No. 5 St. Mary’s 0

When two great pitchers go head-to-head sometimes one run is all the difference. Unfortunately for St. Mary’s a passed ball was the difference. Norton’s lone run came on a passed ball allowing Norton’s baserunner to score from third.

The Lancers’ ace was in the circle and pitched a two-hitter, which was enough to end the Spartans season.

St. Mary’s ends the season with a 16-5 record.
