Bike to the Sea tries new terrain

LYNN-Cyclists hit the ‘rocky’ roads this Saturday during Bike to the Sea’s Intro to Gravel ride.

The event was a collaboration between the organization and Lynn’s North Shore Cycle shop. Bike to the Sea also provided mountain or hybrid bicycles to riders who did not already own one from its “Bike Kitchen” based in Malden.

Gravel riding is a discipline in which cyclists ride on unpaved terrain, which may include literal gravel, dirt paths, and wooded single paths. The ride began at Linear Park along Northern Strand Trail and took off into Lynn Woods and Rumney Marsh.

Riding for about an hour, attendees cycled back for lunch featuring an array of Dominican dishes at Linear Park.

Agnes Recato, program manager for Bike to the Sea said this is the organization’s first time hosting an event focused on gravel riding and was happy to see new faces.

She added she hoped the event would serve as a way to bring attention to the free trails available to cyclists in the community as well as provide the opportunity to learn more about gravel riding.

Recato said she would like for the event to help attendees to “find more confidence in gravel riding or if they already have confidence in gravel riding, maybe just boost their confidence.”

She said a lot of people are unfamiliar with the concept of gravel riding, so the organization hoped to make a welcoming and friendly opportunity for cyclists to learn.

Recato said she also wants the community to know that the City of Lynn is caring for the Lynn woods, and it is part of their community as a resource for recreational activity.
