Lynn lawyer wins Ida B. Wells award

Lynn native Nicole Bluefort has practiced law since 2011, winning awards and gaining a positive reputation throughout the years.

Due to her hard work and dedication to her craft, Bluefort recently won the Ida B. Wells Award, which is given to an African American or Black female attorney who “exemplifies the pioneering spirit and courage of Ida B. Wells,” according to the Massachusetts Black Women Attorneys (MBWA) website.

Ida B. Wells was a newspaper editor and journalist who led the American anti-lynching crusade and founded the Negro Fellowship League in 1910.

“I was shocked, I was in tears, and I must say I have received a lot of wonderful, great awards, … but this one was really near and dear to me. Because number one, it was a surprise,” Bluefort said.

She said unlike her other awards, the recipient isn’t nominated and voted on by a committee, but chosen by the MBWA.

“And number two, just really being uplifted and supported by women of color, particularly black women that I feel really understand sort of the struggles that we go through in the legal profession,” Bluefort said.

Bluefort is the founder of the Law Offices of Nicole M. Bluefort, which now has a team of 12.

The firm’s main office is in Lynn, where it was founded, and the other office is in Boston.

This month, Bluefort said she’s excited to announce the grand opening of the firm’s third office, which will be located in Manchester, N.H.

“Our main office is in Lynn and always will be,” Bluefort said.

To separate home and work life, Bluefort now resides in Tewksbury, but said she will always consider herself a “Lynn girl.”

To give back to the community that raised her, Bluefort’s offices gave out a “Spirit of Excellence Award” scholarship this year to a Lynn-based, African American student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and an acceptance letter to a 2 or 4 year university.

“Lynn helped me to be successful, … and this is a part of me being able to give back,” Bluefort said.

Bluefort’s office is a general practice firm that includes family law, probate, criminal defense, estate planning, real estate litigation, and civil litigation.
