You know what I’ve been thinking? St. Mary’s baseball team may have come up short Saturday, but Josh Doney stood tall.
In the No. 2 Spartans’ 3-1 defeat at the hands of top-seeded Oakmont Regional at Polar Park, the bright lights – and bright sun – didn’t bother the ace one bit.
Doney did it all in the Division 3 title game, starting in the first inning. He roped one at the plate to score teammate Michael DeMaino (1-0) and fire up the St. Mary’s crowd.
After the go-ahead RBI, a hyped up Doney showed off his excitement with a nod to the St. Mary’s dugout.
But he wasn’t done there. In the third inning, he connected on a triple against Oakmont’s star pitcher, Caleb Allen.
“He knocked one in and had a huge triple (in the third inning),” said St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana. “I thought Josh played very well today. … He’s (Allen) a competitor and we had him on his heels.”
On the mound, Doney went toe-to-toe with Allen and didn’t disappoint. Doney punched out seven batters and was practically untouchable through four innings.
Even Oakmont coach Tim Caouette applauded the opposing star.
“He was phenomenal,” Caouette said. “Offensively, defensively, he kept us off-balanced. We planned for it, and he was still beating us.”
Josh, who’s just a junior, by the way, good week.
