LYNN — The district’s schools are almost all out for the summer, opening up a lot of free time for kids in the city.
To entertain and educate children during the summer, Kids in Community (KIC) is holding its annual summer camp.
KIC Summer Program Director Audrey Jimenez said that this year will be filled with fun for all.
“We really try to stick to the theme of kids in community,” Jimenez said. “Any child is welcome to come.”
The camp is open to all children entering second grade through seventh grade. It has a $35 registration fee, which covers all activities, breakfast, and lunch.
The camp will cover a variety of subjects and hobbies.
Jimenez said the first hour is focused on literacy and reading, and the next two focus on theater, music, exercise, and arts and crafts. Then, after the kids have lunch, they get to play different games and activities with each other.
The camp employs eight teenagers who are either 16 or 17 years old. Jimenez said it is a great way to teach them how to work with children.
On Fridays, the camp-goers are treated to a field trip and go somewhere in Lynn to learn more about the city they live in.
“We try to teach them a little about the community they’re in, as far as historically, as far as geographically,” Jimenez said. “We’ll take walks around the Common, we’ll walk to the Lynn Museum, we’ll walk to the library.”
Jimenez’s favorite field trip is the Lynn Woods nature hike.
The camp will begin on July 8 and go for four weeks. The camp is held on Monday through Friday, and starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m.
Parents can register their children here.
