To the editor:
As Massachusetts spearheads the clean energy revolution, a pressing threat imperils our progress: the vandalism of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This senseless destruction harms our environment, economy, and public safety. It’s time for swift action to safeguard our EV infrastructure and ensure a sustainable future.
The alarming trend of vandalism in Boston, Cambridge, and Springfield has resulted in costly damages, hindered our transition to a low-carbon transportation sector, and put EV owners at risk. To address this crisis, we must enhance security measures, redesign charging stations with vandal-resistant materials, educate the public, and collaborate with authorities to identify and prosecute vandals.
Massachusetts can draw inspiration from successes in California and Europe, where innovative designs and comprehensive programs have reduced vandalism. Our state’s clean energy industry must also take a leadership role in investing in research and development, collaborating with law enforcement, and supporting education and awareness.
Protecting EV charging infrastructure is crucial for our environment, public safety, and economy. By working together, we can ensure a safer, more sustainable transportation system and maintain Massachusetts’ leadership in the clean energy revolution. The time for action is now.
