LTE: Thank you to everyone who supported the first Cure By The Harbor

To The Editor

June 19, 2024 by To The Editor

To the editor:

Thank you to the Marblehead community for supporting the first annual Cure By The Harbor, a fundraiser established to honor my husband who died in 2021 at 44 of an aggressive form of lung cancer that affects nonsmokers.

The $25,000 raised will fund Mass General’s research on rare cancers, like the one that Kevin was diagnosed with at 41. Prior to his diagnosis, Kevin was extremely healthy and very active. In addition to fundraising, we will work to eliminate the stigma associated with lung cancer, which many assume is a “smoker’s cancer.”

As a lifelong Marbleheader, I am grateful for the outpouring of support. Two dozen area businesses generously donated auction items or sponsored the event. A very special shout out to my co-host, Liz Steinfeld of Liz Steinfeld Fine Lingerie, who created an amazing fashion show; Lindsey Foley of Lindsey Foley Style, our emcee; good friends Christina Ferri and Emily Moss, who helped us plan a multifaceted event; and the Dolphin Yacht Club, where I serve as commodore, the ultimate venue on a picture-perfect Marblehead evening.

Thank you to my high-school friend, Dana Farber oncologist Dr. Rachel Freedman, who helped navigate Kevin’s health care journey; Dr. Zosia Piotrowska from the MGH Cancer Center for Lung and Pulmonary Cancer; and Dianne Legg, a 20-year lung cancer survivor and founder of LUNGSTRONG, which advocates for lung-cancer research. And special thanks to the Mass General Cancer Center team that helped sustain our family during a very challenging time.

Finally, thank you to Callie who designed the Cure By The Harbor logo and enlisted Marblehead High School student volunteers who donated their time, and Cole who helped with pre-event planning. Their love and support have been unwavering. Your dad would be very proud.

Sincerely,

Alyssa Prince
