LYNN — What’s better than heat waves? Sound waves.
From 1 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, the community is invited to Red Rock Park to hear from 12 local artists spanning multiple genres for the inaugural Lynn Music Festival: A Celebration of Local Music on the Beach.
Edwin Cabrera, the executive director of the Lynn Music Foundation, said while the foundation has held other music festivals in the past, and plans to hold another later this summer, they have mainly centered around hip-hop.
“We wanted to do another annual festival more catered to celebrating local music in general,” Cabrera said. “For this festival, it’s going to be a bunch of different genres of music.”
The event is free of charge and will feature the Makanda Project, a 16-piece orchestra renowned for its exploration of the previously unrecorded compositions of Makanda Ken McIntyre, as the headliner.
According to Cabrera, MacIntyre was a Boston native who was considered an “innovative yet under-recognized” multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator. After his death, 350 unrecorded pieces he had written were discovered.
“I want to make sure that the local artists have different, multiple outlets,” Cabrera said.
While many Lynn Music Foundation events are held at the Vault Theatre at LynnArts, Cabrera said this time he wanted to bring the music to the people. Where do people hang out during the summer? The beach.
“This is kind of bringing the music to where the people are and introducing them to local artists,” Cabrera said.
For those who do not want to drive or walk to the festival, there will be a free trolley service from 3 to 6 p.m., going from the Lynn Museum downtown to Red Rock Park.
