LYNN — The North Shore NAACP Branch has announced Javier Patricio Santo as the recipient of this year’s Avis Peters Scholarship.
Patricio Santo graduated from Lynn English this year and plans to attend Brown University in the fall. Patricio Santo’s career goal is to become a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon.
According to a press release from the branch, in high school, Patricio Santo was class president, student body ambassador, and leader of the inclusivity panel. He was a two-time volleyball captain and participated in track and field and tennis.
Patricio Santo was a top scholar at Lynn English, and founded initiatives such as the Patricio Santo Foundation and the Wings of Compassion Initiative, “through which he made a tangible impact on both the lives of high-achieving students and bed-bound pediatric youth in the Boston metropolitan region.”
Patricio Santo also founded HarvestHope, a local community refrigerator to combat food insecurity; and the Little Yard Library Project, which provides free books to children to promote literacy.
Along with the Avis Peters Scholarship, Patricio Santo won numerous other awards.
According to the branch, the Avis Peters Scholarship is in its second year. It assists students from the “African diaspora (or other minority group)” who demonstrate “academic promise, and who share a passion for the NAACP mission of eradicating race-based discrimination.”
The scholarship awards $2,500 to the chosen student.
