You could say the City of Lynn is a special place, known for its community, history, and athletics.
Some of the top athletes in Massachusetts come from Lynn. Between the programs it offers and the kids who take part, it’s no surprise to see talented athletes all across the city – one with more than 100,000 people.
Most recently, the Lynn Elementary School 5th Grade Outdoor Track Championship took place. More than 1,000 elementary students participated in the 9th Annual event.
The competition is across multiple days, and includes nine events for kids to show off their abilities.
Schools are divided between boys and girls, all competing for the top prize. This year, the boys champions came from Shoemaker (45 points), with Sisson (41), and Ingalls (40) following closely behind.
In the girls’ division, the top winner was Washington, which dominated with 55 points. Ford placed second with 31, while Harrington took bronze with 28.
Some of the highly-anticipated events were the softball throw and 100-meter dash.
In the 100-meter dash, Shoemaker’s Tristan Duvert tied the meet record with a 14.3 to claim first place. Richmond Kebei of Fallon was just barely trailing, at 14.5.
On the girls’ side, Charlize Moncion of Hood Elementary narrowly missed out on setting a meet record. Her 100-meter time of 15.2 was a tenth-of-a-second away from tying Sisson’s Britney Edukugho’s record of 15.1, which has stood strong since 2015.
Moving onto the softball throw, Nevaeh Best (Callahan) showed her strength with a 94-10 hurl, which was far ahead of the trailing pack. On the boys’ side, Anthony Owumi took home gold with a throw of 136-09, which brought lots of points to Shoemaker, the eventual champion.
Other highlights included a tie in the girls’ 50-meter dash between Nicole Bernabe Peguero from Washington and Brianna Sanchez Urena of Ford, with both runners finishing with times around 8.0 seconds.
It wasn’t just sprinting and throwing at the meet, but rather, distance runners got to show off their speed and stamina in the 800-meter dash and mile run.
Lucy Labbe of Shoemaker ran a 7:47.4 mile to claim first place.
On the boys’ side, there were two runners who ran sub-7-minute miles. Brickett’s Iden Ayala-Francisc ran the fastest with a 6:47.1, while Sisson’s Dylan Martel ran a 6:56.4 to snag silver.
With more than 1,000 kids, it calls for a lot of help. Students from Lynn English, Lynn Classical, and Lynn Tech all assisted to make the event run smoothly, according to organizer Joseph Abelon.
- A special thanks to Abelon, who helps provide kids, families, and The Item with event information, statistics, and records.
