Saugus’ young readers turning pages for summer

SAUGUS — With children out of school for the summertime, the Saugus Public Library is kicking off its 2024 summer reading program, which is titled “Read, Renew, Repeat!”

The program is slated to feature a wide swath of programming, including, but not limited, to story times, literacy support, and arts and crafts.

Additionally, the library will be offering discounted museum passes for the summer, as well as passes to parks in Massachusetts.

The title of the program, “Read, Renew, Repeat!” suggests a theme of conservation, encouraging young readers to frequent their local library to satisfy their voracious appetites for literature over and over again.

The program will be open to the public and geared toward young people, ranging from those attending preschool through sixth grade. Families can sign their children up for the program through an application called Beanstack.

There will be plenty to satisfy the district’s recommended 20 minutes of reading per day in the program, with free offerings of e-books, audiobooks, comics, and more through resources such as hoopla and Libby.

Local businesses have partnered with the library as well, donating funds to allow it to award young readers with prizes and free books, as well as drawings for ice cream, donuts, roller skating, bowling, and a grand-prize drawing for tickets to Canobie Lake Park.

Additionally, during the duration of the program, there will be visits to the library from Wildlife Encounters, Vinny the Bubble Guy, characters from “Star Wars,” the Fire and Police departments, the Toe Jam Puppet Band, and more.

In a press release, the library reiterated that participation in this program is free, and urged families to get involved in helping to develop reading routines for their children in the summer months and help make reading fun for them.
