To the editor:
There’s something magical about the water – a serene peace that washes over you as you gaze out at its vast expanse. For me, it’s a feeling of gratitude, a sense of home. But for many in Lynn, nestled against the Atlantic, the water can be intimidating, instilling fear rather than tranquility.
In our community, where we are familiar with freshwater ponds and saltwater waves, the ability to navigate these waters confidently is more than a skill; it’s a vital necessity. Yet, startling statistics reveal a troubling reality. According to USASwimming.org, a staggering 79% of children from families earning less than $50,000 annually lack basic swimming abilities.
Luckily for us, the North Shore Maritime Center offers hope amidst these turbulent waters. Operating on Sluice Pond, this nonprofit organization is transforming lives, one stroke at a time. Offering an assortment of aquatic activities – including kayaking, rowing, and stand-up paddle boarding – the center is a sanctuary where both young and old can conquer their fears and embrace the water with newfound confidence.
But what sets North Shore Maritime apart isn’t just its programs, it’s its unwavering commitment to inclusivity. No one is turned away for financial reasons. Whether you’re a seasoned rower or a hesitant novice, there’s a place for you here. From free community events to week-long learn-to-row sessions, the center opens its arms wide, inviting all to experience the joy of water sports.
I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of this organization. Watching my son, once timid around water, grow into a confident young rower has been nothing short of miraculous. His journey with North Shore Maritime has not only shaped his character but has also opened doors to new opportunities, connecting him with the vibrant community of the St. Mary’s crew team.
As a parent and a member of this community, I urge you to seize the chance to embark on your own aquatic adventure. Whether it’s signing up for a weekly rowing class or simply attending a weekend event, the experiences awaiting you at North Shore Maritime are bound to leave you with a wonderful experience.
Together, let’s make waves, not just for ourselves but for every child in Lynn, ensuring they too have the opportunity to sail into a brighter, more confident future.
