Team of the Week – South (Agganis softball)

Joey Barrett

June 30, 2024 by Joey Barrett

You know what I’ve been thinking? With the Agganis Games in the books, a lot of them were tight. This one wasn’t.

Let’s see. The football game saw lead changes in the second half, boys lacrosse ended with a two-goal difference, baseball was a low-scoring thriller, and the boys basketball game was won by just six points.

Then, there was the softball game, which saw South steamroll North, 14-4, with 11 runs across the final three innings. It was a complete, polished performance from coach Colleen Newbury (St. Mary’s) and company.

Most Valuable Player Addison Connelly, of Arlington High, went 4-for-4. In the circle, Lynn English’s Arianna Laboy (4 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 2 K) and Marblehead’s Ruby Calienes (3 IP, R, H) made sure the offensive explosion remained in safe hands.

“I’m happy to leave Lynn English with a lot of pride,” said a postgame Laboy at Fraser Field in Lynn.

Also contributing were St. Mary’s Gabriella Marichal (2-for-4, R) and Lorynes Suriel (2-for-4, R), as well as Whittier’s Maddie Noury (2-for-2, 2 RBI, 2 R).

“It’s a great day to get to know the kids you play against all year,” Newbury said. “They played great together and had a really good vibe. They just wanted to win and show off their talent. They let their talent come out. I think they were a little nervous in the beginning, but once they got comfortable, they had a great day.”
