PEABODY — A recreational vehicle caught on fire while parked outside a home on Walker Road and left three victims burned, according to the Fire Department.
Two medevac helicopters transported two of the victims to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Fire Chief Jay Dowling said.
Photos show the interior of the RV was damaged and the siding of a house was melted.
Sharyn Prestejohn, who lives three houses down from the site of the incident and said she has known the victims for nearly 30 years, said she was in her house when she heard a “big boom” or “explosion” outside.
“I opened up my living-room window, opened up the screen, looked up to the left of my house, and saw fire and dark, dark smoke billowing up into the sky,” Prestejohn said. “Everybody came out. Everybody’s house had shaken. Everybody was scared. They didn’t know what it was.”
The three victims were a grandfather, father, and son, Prestejohn said.
She said the grandfather and father were escorted down the street to an ambulance, where they received medical treatment. They were transported by helicopter to MGH for further treatment.
The son was also burned and taken by ambulance to Lahey Hospital in Burlington for further treatment, Dowling said.
“Everybody was just upset and crying and concerned,” Prestejohn said.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated by detectives from the Police Department, fire investigators from the Fire Department, and state fire marshals, Dowling said.
