BOSTON — Two were left standing, but only one could remain victorious.
It was a happy Saturday for the Greater Lynn Babe Ruth 15/16-year-old All-Stars, who defeated Plymouth, 8-3, at Garvey Park in Dorchester to capture the state championship.
Coach Sam Ohannesian’s squad racked up 11 hits, led by outfielder Jared Burke who went 2-for-2 with three RBI from the No. 9 spot. Braeden Ohannesian (3 K, BB) earned the win, allowing just five hits and two runs (1 unearned) across 4 2/3 innings.
Jake Peterson, Burke, and Kalen Huddle each collected two hits for Lynn. Mark Walsh – who also played well in relief – led the way with two walks (Lynn piled up 9 walks in total.).
All that said, it wasn’t easy. Plymouth roped a single to find the scoreboard in the first inning (1-0).
But a walk from Burke helped tie the game, 1-1, in the second before Lynn jumped back on top in the third. Maxwell Parent hit a sacrifice fly, Gavin Collins singled, Braeden Ohannesian walked, and Burke singled, each scoring one run in the inning.
Ben Peruzzi took the hard-luck loss for Plymouth. Across 2 1/3 innings, he gave up five runs on four hits, striking out four and walking four.
Lynn took part in a championship escort Saturday evening down Lynnfield Street, Parkland Avenue, and Breed Middle School. And, now, it’s off to Regionals next weekend in Augusta, Maine.
“With that win, we move on to regionals,” said manager Sam Ohannesian. “I’m extremely proud of these young men and the work they’ve put in. I’m looking forward to a great run in Augusta, Maine.”
Lynn defeated Taunton, 5-4, at Fraser Field in the semifinals. Peterson led the way in that one, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing just four hits, one earned run, and two walks.
Six St. Mary’s Spartans (Peterson, Devin Duvall, Huddle, Parent, Jack Spates, Burke), a Lynn Tech Tiger (Riley Driscoll), and nine Lynn Classical Rams (Boo Disaia, Braeden Ohannesian, Brayden Curley, Collin Hart, Elijah Morrin, Collins, Walsh, Rolky Brea, Sam Morris) are on the roster.
Right after the game, Lynn’s 14-year-old All-Stars played in their own state title game, but fell, 6-0, at the hands of Taunton, which plated five runs in the seventh inning.
That said, it wasn’t without positives. Starting pitcher Brennen Malloy went five innings, allowing two hits, no runs, and striking out nine. Offensively, Alphonse Wilhelmsson was 2-for-2, while Eli Fialho batted 2-for-3.
