PEABODY — A scrapyard fire on Corwin Street, which began Tuesday night, took firefighters until 1:30 a.m. Wednesday to extinguish, Fire Chief Jay Dowling said.
Dowling said the fire occurred at a scrapyard operated by C&R Automotive, which leases the property from W.C. Gurrisi & Sons Inc.
The Fire Department began receiving calls from residents in the area reporting black smoke, Dowling said.
The fire consisted of burning scrap metal, cars, and tires, he said.
All five Peabody fire engines and a ladder truck reported to the scene to extinguish the fire, Dowling said.
No workers were on the property at the time of the fire, but the owners of C&R Automotive and Gurrisi & Sons arrived, he said.
Dowling said the Lynn, Lynnfield, and Salem fire departments provided coverage as Peabody Fire responded to the fire.
No one was injured as a result of the fire and its cause is being investigated by Peabody Fire investigators and the state fire marshal’s office, Dowling added.
